What is the meaning of the hemp leaf pattern? Hemp leaves grow quickly, reaching 4m in 4 months, and because they grow straight and fast, the hemp leaf pattern represents the wish for a child's healthy growth. This pattern also has the meaning of warding off evil, and has been widely used as a pattern for newborn clothes since ancient times.

大麻 - Introduction of hemp history in Japan.

Hemp has a long history in Japan, and has been a special plant that has been indispensable to the Japanese people for over 15,000 years.
Cannabis control laws in Japan were introduced by the victorious United States at the time of defeat in the war, and hemp culture in Japan is on the way to extinction. This Cannabis Control Act was enacted by the United States when the petrochemical industry, which was born in the 1920s, entered a period of growth and DuPont, a major player in the petrochemical industry, began acquiring many patents.
Since ancient times, hemp has been considered to represent"freshness, purity, innocence, and purification of impurities." Because of this, it seems that it has been treated as a material used in shrines, which are sacred places in Japan. Also, hemp is a material that has been familiar to Japanese people for a long time, and one reason can be considered that it can be used for a wide variety of things.
Events include the imperial court ceremony called "Daijousai," which is held after the emperor ascends to the throne. At this Daijo Festival, linen cloth called "Aratae" is offered. Hemp has been treated as a sacred material since ancient times, and is also used in court ceremonies.
Hemp is also associated with Japan's traditional performing arts, sumo wrestling, and is said to appear in mythology. Hemp is also used for the ropes worn by yokozuna, and the hemp cord called "Ampomi" is said to be made by sumo wrestlers. Yokozuna's rope, which is said to be a rope where the gods dwell, is also treated as a lucky charm.
Since the Kamakura period, the world has changed from the previous Heian nobility to a world dominated by samurai, and a society where violent wars continued, so samurai's clothing became more mobile and light like that of ordinary people.
Furthermore, with the advent of the Edo era, kamishimo became the formal clothing of the samurai era. A kamari is a combination of a sleeveless jacket called a kataginu and a hakama, and is made of the same color and material.
The material for the kimono was officially decided to be linen.
